Chemical stability of glass
Various uses of glass, are required to have a certain degree of chemical stability. For example, the chemical stability of poor flat glass, often in storage and transport will be damp and sticky; optical instruments of various types of lenses in the atmosphere and the role of water will be mouldy scrap; chemical instruments due to glass erosion and the impact of analytical results; light bulbs glass shells due to weathering and hair; especially for the packaging of pharmaceutical injection of drugs, such as ampoules, saline bottles, in autoclaving and various climatic conditions and long-term contact with the liquid. In the case of poor chemical stability, the glass will be dissolved in the liquid, or even into pieces off (commonly known as flakes), the lighter the quality of the liquid, the heavier the serious impact on the health of the user, or even life-threatening, so any glass products must have it specified in the chemical stability indicators. (P122) The chemical stability of glass is a very complex physicochemical behavior. General glass products only require good durability to atmospheric and aqueous solutions. Bottles for liquid pharmaceuticals or chemical reagents should be selected according to the nature of the liquid's glass composition. Medical ampoules are often complex in nature due to the nature of the injectable solution and have high requirements for packaging materials, generally using "neutral materials". (P128)
§7-4 Several special cases of erosion
I. Glass "flake"
The glass resistance to alkali flaking is an important product inspection standard for medical ampoule glass. When poorly chemically stable glass ampoules are used to contain alkaline (PH8-12) injectable solutions, flaking and cloudiness can occur due to erosion of the solution after autoclaving or long-term storage. Injections containing such detachments can cause serious damage to the health of the user and can even be life-threatening. Therefore, ampoules that are subject to debridement are absolutely forbidden in medical practice.
The test method for detachment is generally modelled on the sterilisation conditions for ampoules in pharmaceutical factories, where cleaned ampoules encapsulated with 0.01 NHCl and 0.001 NaOH are heated in an autoclave at a gauge pressure of 1.05 kg/cm2 (121°C) for 30 minutes, cooled and visually inspected under fluorescent light. definite flake removal.
