Types and styles of ampoules
Ampoules are small glass containers used to hold medicinal solutions. They are commonly used for injectable solutions, but are also used for oral liquids, but are now out of fashion due to the difficulty of opening them for consumers and the risk of accidents.
Injection containers are generally ampoules or containers made of hard neutral glass (e.g. penicillin vials), but also plastic containers.
Ampoules are now available in necked ampoules and powder ampoules, with volumes of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20ml, and also in curved-necked ampoules. The new national standard GB2637-1995 stipulates that all ampoules used for aqueous injection should be curved-necked and easily folded ampoules. To avoid contamination of the ampoule with glass chips and particles when breaking the ampoule neck, the State Drug Administration (SDA) has enforced the use of easy-folding ampoules with curved necks.
There are two types of easy-fold ampoules: colour ring easy-fold ampoules and dot-mark easy-fold ampoules. A low melting point powder with a coefficient of expansion twice as high as that of ampoule glass is fused to the neck of the ampoule to form a ring, and after cooling, due to the difference in the coefficients of expansion of the two types of glass, a ring of permanent stress is generated in the ring, which can be broken by force and is less likely to produce glass fragments. When folding, the force is applied to the back of the middle of the indentation, and after fracture, the section should be flat. At present, ampoules are mostly colourless, which is useful for checking the clarity of the medicine. For drugs that require light shielding, amber-coloured glass ampoules can be used. Amber colour can filter out ultraviolet light and is suitable for photosensitive drugs. Amber ampoules contain iron oxide and traces of iron oxide may be leached into the product. Amber glass containers should not be used if the product contains ingredients that can be catalysed by iron ions.
Powder ampoules are used to dispense injectable powders or crystalline drugs. The neck of the bottle is thick or flared to facilitate the loading of the drug. The body of the bottle is as thick as the neck, and a groove is blown in the connection between the neck and the body, which can be sawed open when used and injected after dissolving in solvent. This kind of ampoule is inconvenient to use. In recent years, a kind of injection container has been developed which can contain both powder and solvent, the container is divided into two chambers, the lower compartment contains sterile drug powder, the upper compartment contains solvent, the middle is separated by a special septum, when using, the top plug is pressed down, the septum opens, the solvent flows into the lower compartment, the drug is dissolved and then used. This kind of container for injection is especially suitable for some drugs that are unstable in solution.
